Why Sump Pump Coverage Matters By: Andrew Ardolf, Owner of CCS Cleaning and Restoring

One of the most common issues restoration contractors encounter after a water loss is discovering that the homeowner either does not have sump pump and water backup coverage — or the limits are far too low to properly cover the damage.

Unfortunately, many insureds only realize this after a loss has already occurred.

With heavier rainfall, aging drainage systems, power outages, and more finished basements than ever before, sump pump failures and sewer backups continue to create significant losses for homeowners. When these systems fail, water can enter a basement quickly and cause extensive damage within a matter of hours.

Many homeowners assume their standard homeowner policy automatically covers these types of water losses. However, sump pump overflow and sewer backup coverage often require a separate endorsement. Even when coverage is included, limits such as $5,000 or $10,000 may not come close to covering today’s restoration and reconstruction costs.

This creates an important opportunity for insurance agents to educate and better protect their clients before a claim ever happens.

Having proactive conversations about sump pump coverage and higher limits helps agents provide real value beyond simply quoting a policy price. Clients appreciate agents who take the time to explain potential risks and help them avoid major out-of-pocket expenses after a loss.

These conversations are especially important for homeowners with:

  • Finished basements
  • Home offices or entertainment spaces below grade
  • High-value contents stored in basements
  • Older homes or aging drainage systems

In many situations, increasing water backup limits adds only a relatively small premium while providing substantially greater protection.

For insurance agents, reviewing sump pump coverage is more than adding an endorsement — it is an opportunity to strengthen client trust, reduce coverage disputes, and help homeowners avoid unexpected financial hardship.

When a loss occurs, proper coverage can make the difference between a manageable claim and a devastating uncovered expense.
